Seattle Chef's Face Off: DeLille Cellars Bastille Day Challenge

For 17 years, DeLille Cellars has been honoring the French Holiday Bastille Day with a celebration all their own. Each year four specially selected chefs wow 150 guests with wonderful petite entrees prepared specifically to pair with the DeLille Cellars pre-release vintage 2010 Chaleur Estate Blanc.  This wine has been on the Wine Enthusiast's Top 100 for two consecutive years.  Each year the theme for portraying the talents of our local chefs changes, and in the past we have had categories such as top women chefs, top chefs featured in Food & Wine Magazine, James Beard Award winners, etc..

This year the theme was Chefs who's restaurants reside in area hotel.  The four selected were Greg Lopez from Urbane at Olive 8, Brian Scheeser from Trellis at the Heathman Hotel, Steve Cain from El Gaucho in the Seattle Inn at El Gaucho, and John Roberts from Six Seven at the Edgewater Hotel.  All Chefs were at the top of their game having prepared amazing dishes to delight the guests.

The beautiful sunny afternoon was full of energy as the guests sat at assorted tables set throughout the grassy knoll. Surrounded by ponds and waterfalls, the upper terrace of the winery's Chateau property is truly stunning this time of year.  Sun hats, sunglasses, and festive attire was abundant as we all enjoyed the nice weather, amazing food, and of course, the Chaleur Estate Blanc.

As the afternoon winds down, guests place their vote for the chef who they felt prepared the best dish to pair with the wine, not their favorite dish but the one best paired with the style of the wine.  It is always fun to see how the people vote and it is always a close call as each chef prepared delectable dishes.  This years winner was Steve Cain from El Gaucho who grilled a Jumbo South African Prawn in a terragon vin beurre blanc sauce.

As in years past, the winner receives a specially engraved magnum of the Chaleur Estate Blanc to display in their restaurant.  Everyone enjoyed the afternoon, and we look forward to next years competition and amazing guests (some of whom have attended each and every year).
