Chihuly Garden & Glass Exhibition Groundbreaking
Tuesday, August 23, 2011 was an important day for the city of Seattle. The new and much talked about Chihuly Exhibit to be built on the grounds of the Seattle Center was finally breaking ground. About 200 people were invited to view the groudbreaking and it was quite exciting for Greg & I to be a part of the action. We were greeted by Chihuly's own Billy O'Neill, who welcomed the crowd and introduced the team of speakers each having been a part of the huge efforts to get this project approved and funded.
Mayor Mike McGinn also welcomed the group and discussed the importance of this exhibit to the city as well as it's significance to the Seattle Center property which turns 50 this next year. Jeff Wright spoke on behalf of the Wright Family, who own the Space Needle, and the surrounding property. Dale Chihuly himself thanked the crowd, and give us a visual of the 9 rooms that will create the 1.5 acre exhibit, claiming this to be his largest installation in the World, and rightly so in his own hometown. Leslie Jackson Chihuly spoke elequently about the significance of the exhibit to the Arts, and also announced the official title "Chihuly Garden & Glass Exhibition." Following the speeches, all spokesmen donned hard hats and grabbed shovels for the official shoveling of the first dirt to signify the beginning of construction. As a big fan of Art, especially Glass Art, I was honored and proud to be a part of this new and exciting exhibit for our City. I personally cannot wait to see it in completion, scheduled for late Spring 2012. This will be AMAZING! Cheers!
