Women Take Over! The SAM
Seattle Art Museum is letting Women Take Over this holiday season! From now until January 13th the Sam will host some 130 pieces of art by 75 women from 1907- 2007. Much like the Pompidou Center in Paris did for two years, the SAM will ONLY feature female artists! There are video displays, sculptures, paintings, and photographs that together represent the revolution of women and art from the past decade through a female perspective. Originally designed to travel, this exhibit has only been adopted by one other museum other than its founding home at the Pompidou Center, and that it us here at the SAM! Many empowering pieces of art have explored the female mind and perspective, however this is a uniquely grand gesture to feature solely women for an extended amount of time. Thanks SAM :)
Due to it's gender biased identity as an exhibit, there are of course some challenging and certainly provoking pieces.
Frida Kahlo, Yayoi Kusama, and Georgia O'Keeffe are all women featured at Women Take Over: SAM. Some other artists that may be fun to check out from the Pompidou Center that will be visiting are the Guerrilla Girls and Annette Messager. There is something for everyone! Men, you too :D
What an historic exhibit! Dozens and dozens of artists with so many perspectives, this is truly an inspirational exhibit with plenty of time for you to go see. Go online here to buy your tickets. Prices run from $23 for adults and $12 for students and teens.
Indulge in your artistic curiosity and knowledge, and support fellow women. Go to the SAM!
